People perceive cancer, a cold, a heart attack, or an illness of some other important organ as a betrayal. The patient is shocked that such a close (and hitherto great) friend as his own body suddenly seizes up and goes on strike. Our next reaction is that if a friend lets us down so mercilessly, then they are no longer worthy of our friendship. And according to the resulting conclusion, it is completely irrelevant whether this friend is worthy of us or not. One cannot turn away from one's own unfaithful body, petition against it, pretend not to be at home when called on the phone. (...) Perhaps the body is not a friend at all, but an enemy, which, since the beginning of the disease, is only preparing to victoriously destroy the higher will that has dominated it until now.

"Az emberek a rákot, szélhűdést, szívrohamot vagy valami más, fontos szervük megbetegedését árulásként fogják fel. A beteget megdöbbenti, hogy egy ilyen közeli (és eleddig nagyszerű) barátja, mint a saját teste, egyszer csak fogja magát, és sztrájkba kezd. A következő reakciónk az, hogy ha egy barát ilyen könyörtelenül cserbenhagy bennünket, akkor már nem is érdemes a barátságunkra. Az ebből eredő következtetés szerint pedig az már végképp lényegtelen, hogy ez a barát méltó-e hozzánk, vagy sem. Az ember nem fordulhat el saját hűtlen testétől, nem nyújthat be ellene petíciót, nem csinálhat úgy, mintha nem lenne otthon, amikor telefonon keresik. (...) Talán a test egyáltalán nem is barát, hanem ellenség, mely a betegség kezdete óta csak arra készül, hogy győzedelmesen a porig rombolja azt a felsőbb akaratot, amely eddig őt uralta."
