"Wenn man späht und doch nicht sieht, so heißt das "merkwürdig". Wenn man lauscht und doch nicht hört, so heißt das "seltsam". Wenn man nach etwas greift und es nicht faßt, so heißt das "winzig". Diese drei kann man nicht auf die Reihe bringen. Daher nimmt man sie zusammen und macht Eines daraus. Von oben ist es nicht hell, von unten nicht dunkel. Durch noch so vieles Erforschen kann es nicht auf den Begriff gebracht werden. Denn man kommt dabei auf das Nichts der Dinge zurück. Deshalb nennt man es Abbild der Gestalt des Nichts. Es ist die Erscheinung des Nichts der Dinge. Deshalb nennt man es auch verworren und verrückt. Davorstehend sieht man nicht seinen Kopf, ihm nachfolgend sieht man nicht seinen Hintern. Man erfaßt damit das Dao der Alten und dadurch das verborgene Sein von heute. Man kann damit den Anfang des Alten kennen. Deshalb nenne ich es die Erinnerung des Dao."

"Because the eye gazes but can catch no glimpse of it, It is called elusive. Because the ear listens but cannot hear it, It is called the rarefied. Because the hand feels for it but cannot find it, It is called the infinitesimal. These three, because they cannot be further scrutinized, Blend into one, Its rising brings no light; Its sinking, no darkness. Endless the series of things without name On the way back to where there is nothing. They are called shapeless shapes; Forms without form; Are called vague semblance. Go towards them, and you can see no front; Go after them, and you see no rear. Yet by seizing on the Way that was You can ride the things that are now. For to know what once there was, in the Beginning, This is called the essence of the Way."

"Nézem, nem látom, neve: simuló; hallgatom, nem hallom, neve: illanó; megfognám, nem tudom, neve: finom. E három nem: egy titok. Kívül nem világos, belül nem sötét, formátlan forma, testtelen kép. A nemlétbe lép. Nézem, hiába: arca nincsen, teste nincsen – árnyak árnya. Ős ÚT vezessen a jelenbe át; a kezdetet tudd, az ÚT fonalát."

"Высматривают, не обнаруживают -- именуют заурядным. Подслушивают, не становится известным -- именуют тихим. Ловят, не добывают -- именуют ничтожным. О них не могут до конца дознаться из-за того, что слилось и образовали одно целое. Их верхи не выставляются, их низы не таятся, сплетенные пряди невозможно различить. Возвращаются к отсутствию символов. Это значит не иметь наружного свидетельства, не иметь отличительных признаков; это называется неразличимостью. Идут навстречу -- не обнаруживают их головного, следуют за ними -- не обнаруживают их замыкающего. Крепко стоят за древние порядки, чтобы таким образом противостоять современным владетелям, способны руководствоваться древними началами. Это и означает общинные устои."
