"Die Wohltäter des Altertums verstanden das Winzig-Geheimnisvolle des Ursprungs. Aber seine Tiefe konnten sie nicht erkennen. Sie konnten sie noch nicht erkennen. Daher der kräftige Ausdruck ihrer Handlungen. Zunächst, wie der Winter über einen Fluß kommt, waren sie vorsichtig nach allen vier Himmelsrichtungen, aber fest in ihrer Haltung. Unregelmässig, wie das Eis zu schmelzen beginnt, betrieben sie ihre rohen Geschäfte, weitläufig wie ihre Täler, anschwellend wie der Schlamm. Wie vermochten sie den Schlamm in Ruhe sich reinigen zu lassen? Wie vermochten sie friedlich durch dauernde Bemühung Lebendiges wachsen zu lassen! Indem sie dieses Dao bewahrten und keinen Überfluß begehrten, denn es gab noch keinen Überfluß. So konnten sie unbewußt ohne Neuerungen etwas zustande bringen."

"Of old those that were the best officers of Court Had inner natures subtle, abstruse, mysterious, penetrating, Too deep to be understood. And because such men could not be understood I can but tell of them as they appeared to the world: Circumspect they seemed, like one who in winter crosses a stream, Watchful, as one who must meet danger on every side. Ceremonious, as one who pays a visit; Yet yielding, as ice when it begins to melt. Blank, as a piece of uncarved wood; Yet receptive as a hollow in the hills. Murky, as a troubled stream —– (Tranquil, as the vast reaches of the sea, Drifting as the wind with no stop.) Which of you an assume such murkiness, To become in the end still and clear? Which of you can make yourself insert, To become in the end full of life and stir? Those who possess this Tao do not try to fill themselves to the brim, And because they do not try to fill themselves to the brim, They are like a garment that endures all wear and need never be renewed."

"Az őskor mesterei finomak voltak, mélyre hatoltak; rejtőzők, megfoghatatlanok. Leírom őket úgy-ahogy: mint a téli folyón árkelűk, megfontoltak; mint a szomszédoktól rettegők, óvatosak; mint a vendég, illedelmesek; mint az olvadó jég, engedelmesek; mint a rönk, egyszerűek; mint a völgy, tágasak; mint az örvény, homályosak. Ha nyugszik az örvény: tisztul lassan; ha mozdul a nyugvó: éled lassan. Aki az ÚTon jár, megtelni nem kíván. A réginél megáll, nem vágyik új után."

"Те, кто в древности считались наилучшими служилыми, затмеваются таинством времени, для общения недоступны, нет возможности знать их в лицо. Вот именно потому, что нет возможности судить о внешности, поэтому произвольный воссоздаем их образ. Осторожные -- как будто зимой переходят вброд поток. Насторожены, как если бы боялись всех четырех соседей! Как неодолимы! Они подобны щиту. Как растворялись! Точно лед, только что растаявший. Как надежны! Они подобны древесине дуба. Как сдержанны! Они подобны дамбе. О, как же путаники напоминают муть! Почему способны были дать отстояться, с тем чтобы успокоить и все очистить? Почему способны умиротворять, с тем чтобы в течение долгого времени были трудоспособны и все благоденствовали? Кто стал гарантом этой обители жизни, тот не стремился расширять владения. Вот именно потому, что не расширяет границы, поэтому способен заслонить, не строя новые крепостные стены."
