"Das große Dao ist überall. Man kann es zu Hilfe nehmen. Alle Dinge stützen sich darauf, sowohl wenn sie entstehen als auch solange sie nicht vergehen. Seine Wirkungen werden nicht "Sein" genannt. Es kleidet und nährt alle Dinge, ohne sie gestaltend zu beherrschen. Das beständige Nichts strebt nur. Man kann es nach dem "Winzigen" benennen. Alle Dinge kehren immer wieder zu ihm zurück, ohne daß es sie gestaltend beherrscht. Man kann es auch dasjenige nennen, welches "Großes" bewirkt, denn schließlich bewirkt keines derselben von sich aus Großes. Eben darum kann es sie vollkommen groß machen."

"Great Tao is like a boat that drifts; It can go this way; it can go that. The ten thousand creatures owe their existence to it and it does not disown them; Yet having produced them, it does not take possession of them. Makes no claim to be master over them, (And asks for nothing from them.) Therefore it may be called the Lowly. The ten thousand creatures obey it, Though they know not that they have a master; Therefore it is called the Great. So too the Sage just because he never at any time makes a show of greatness In fact achieves greatness."

"A nagy ÚT árad – balra folyik, jobbra folyik. Minden belőle ered, s ő mindent gyámolít. Táplál, ruház, nem hatalmaskodik. Ápol, ad, s rejtve marad. Vágya nincs, ezért kicsiny; mindent befogad, ezért nagy. Éppígy a bölcs: nem tesz nagyot, úgy alkot nagyot."

"Множество деревень повсеместно! Они распространены во все стороны. Все существа зависят от них, а потому производят и не уклоняются от дел, в делах содействуют без девизов, одевают и кормят все существа, но не становятся властелином. Обычно неприхотливые, <их> можно именовать небогатыми. Всем существам пристанище, но не становятся властелином. Можно дать имя: основа. Они ни в коем случае не считают себя главными, поэтому могут стать основой."
