If you have separately recognized your unchanging base layer: your timeless, infinite being, in which lies the eternal measure; and its temporal, finite garment: your multiform individuality, in which lie the occasional needs: you are enabled to be guided by your eternal being, not by your ever-changing individuality.
Then you can recognize the true role of your individuality: it is only a signpost to guide you through the world of phenomena. Desires will no longer be violent, but will be like signs on a map: it is up to your discretion how you adapt to them, they are not demanding. Bodily suffering no longer affects you: your body writhes and wails in agony, your being watches and cares for it like a strange, sick animal. Hunger and thirst no longer affect you, nor sensuality, nor joy and sorrow, nor desire for knowledge: you perceive and repair the defects of your body, your feelings, your intellect, as strangely as you would a wrinkle, a stain, a tear in your garment. All that seems desirable in life: wealth, success, power, health, are no more to you than the playthings of childhood to the adult; it is not your appetite but your situation that determines what you wear. Your eternal being does not desire anything, not even salvation: it desires only as steam desires to rise and as a stone desires to fall: not according to its personal desire, but according to the law of its position.
If you have taken the light of your existence out of your individuality and placed it in your eternal being: you have become inviolable, you have taken your destiny into your own hands. You can no longer be harmed or benefited, you function without reward, as the river rolls sand, gives life to fish, carries boat.

Ha külön-külön felismerted változatlan alaprétegedet: időtlen-határtalan lényedet, melyben az örök mérték rejlik; s ennek időbeli, véges ruháját: soktagozatú egyéniségedet, melyben az esetenkénti igények rejlenek: módodban van, hogy az örök lényed s nem a folyton-változó egyéniséged vezessen.

Ezután felismerheted egyéniséged igazi szerepét: csak jelzőkészülék, mely eligazít a jelenség-világban. A vágyak nem lesznek erőszakosak többé, hanem olyanok, mint a jelek a térképen: belátásodtól függ, hogy miként igazodsz hozzájuk, nem követelőznek. A testi szenvedés nem érint többé: tested bármekkora kínok közt vonaglik és jajgat, lényed úgy figyeli és úgy gondozza, mint egy idegen, beteg állatot. Az éhség és szomjúság sem érint ezentúl, sem érzékiség, sem öröm és bánat, sem tudásvágy: tested, érzésed, értelmed hiányait úgy érzékeled és úgy javítod, idegenül, mint ruhádon a gyűrődést, foltot, szakadást, Mindaz, ami az életben kívánatosnak látszik: gazdagság, siker, hatalom, egészség, számodra nem több, mint a felnőttnek gyermekkori játékszerei; nem sóvárgásod, hanem helyzeted jelöli meg, hogy mit viselj. Örök lényed nem vágyik semmire, még az üdvösségre sem: csak úgy kívánja, ahogy a gőz felemelkedni s a kő hullni kíván: nem a személyes vágya, hanem helyzetének törvénye szerint.

Ha létezésednek fényforrását egyéniségedből kiemelted és örök lényedbe helyezted: sérthetetlen lettél, kezedbe vetted sorsodat. Többé nem érhet kár, se haszon, jutalom igénye nélkül működsz, ahogy a folyam homokot görget, halat éltet, hajót cipel.

Atunci când ți-ai recunoscut separat stratul de bază neschimbător: ființa ta atemporală, infinită, în care se află măsura eternă; și îmbrăcămintea sa temporală, finită: individualitatea ta multiformă, în care se află nevoile ocazionale: ai posibilitatea de a fi ghidat de ființa ta eternă, nu de individualitatea ta în continuă schimbare.
Atunci puteți recunoaște adevăratul rol al individualității voastre: ea este doar un indicator care vă ghidează prin lumea fenomenelor. Dorințele nu vor mai fi violente, ci vor fi ca semnele de pe o hartă: rămâne la latitudinea voastră cum vă adaptați la ele, ele nu sunt exigente. Suferința trupească nu vă mai afectează: corpul vostru se zbate și geme în agonie, ființa voastră îl urmărește și îl îngrijește ca pe un animal ciudat, bolnav. Foamea și setea nu te mai afectează, nici senzualitatea, nici bucuria și tristețea, nici dorința de cunoaștere: tu percepi și repari defectele corpului tău, ale sentimentelor tale, ale intelectului tău, la fel de ciudat cum ai face cu un rid, o pată, o ruptură în haina ta. Tot ceea ce pare de dorit în viață: bogăție, succes, putere, sănătate, nu sunt pentru tine mai mult decât jucăriile copilăriei pentru adult; nu apetitul tău, ci situația ta este cea care determină ce porți. Ființa ta eternă nu dorește nimic, nici măcar mântuirea: ea dorește doar așa cum aburul dorește să se ridice și așa cum o piatră dorește să cadă: nu conform dorinței sale personale, ci conform legii poziției sale.
Dacă ai scos lumina existenței tale din individualitatea ta și ai plasat-o în ființa ta eternă: ai devenit inviolabil, ți-ai luat destinul în propriile mâini. Nu mai poți fi vătămat sau avantajat, funcționezi fără recompensă, așa cum râul rostogolește nisipul, dă viață la peștii, poartă corabie.
