The word "illusion" has many meanings, and some illusions are indeed very tempting. For example, it is a tempting illusion that our love will last forever. Or the illusion that we never die. Or that ignorance is bliss. Buddha saw the danger in such temptations. He rarely spoke harshly, but I can imagine how he popped these bubbles one after the other: love is indeed finite, everyone dies, ignorance is indeed equal to stupidity.
