What can you do about the plunge into darkness, the general destruction, the universal suffering? nothing and everything. This is nothing and everything: if you do not participate in the darkness with your own feelings and create in yourself a state of whole-manhood: you are guided not by your desires but by the eternal measure. Wherever the tide takes you: to misery, to prosperity, to forced labour, to the battlefield, to the driving-place, to the perishing-place: care not; the dark power can give you nothing and take nothing from you, if the only-virtuous measure is at work in you. You may lose your comfort, your wealth, your health, your freedom, your life; you will lose them all sooner or later, you cannot take them to the grave; but the perfect measure in your depths cannot be violated even by the destruction of the world, so you must wish to be true to it. Trust thyself to the eternal measure: it is the Noah's ark above the all-covering flood.
For your fellow human beings you can do no more than let them know the only way of escape. No one can be saved by force when the flood covers everything.
It is not true that in a flood the crowd wants to climb Noah's Ark. The Noah's ark seems to be the weakest, most clumsy piece of wood, worth more than the bottom of a bush.

A sötétbe-merülés, általános pusztulás, egyetemes kínszenvedés ellen mit tehetsz? semmit és mindent. Ez a semmi és minden: ha saját érzéseiddel nem veszel részt a sötétségben és megteremted önmagadban a teljes-emberség állapotát: nem vágyaiddal, hanem az örök mértékkel vezetteted magadat. Az áradat bármerre sodor: nyomorba, jómódba, kényszermunkára, harctérre, vezetőhelyre, vesztőhelyre: ne törődj vele; a sötét hatalom nem adhat neked semmit és nem vehet el tőled semmit, ha az egyedül-érvényes mérték működik benned. Odaveszhet kényelmed, vagyonod, egészséged, szabadságod, életed? mindezt úgyis elveszíted előbb-utóbb, a sírba nem viheted magaddal; de a mélyedben rejlő tökéletes mértéket nem sértheti még a világpusztulás sem, ezért kívánj hozzá-igazodni. Az örök mértékre bízd magad: ez a Noé-bárka a mindent beborító áradat fölött.

Embertársaidért nem tehetsz többet, mint hogy az egyetlen menekülési módot tudatod velük. Erőszakkal megmenteni senkit sem lehet, amikor az özön mindent beborít.

Nem igaz, hogy özönvízkor a tömeg a Noé-bárkára akar felkapaszkodni. A Noé-bárka látszik a leggyöngébb, legegyügyűbb tákolmánynak, melynél egy bokor alja is többet ér.

Ce puteți face în legătură cu cufundarea în întuneric, distrugerea generală, suferința universală? nimic și totul. Acesta este nimic și totul: dacă nu participi la întuneric cu propriile tale sentimente și creezi în tine o stare de om complet: nu ești ghidat de dorințele tale, ci de măsura eternă. Oriunde te duce valul: spre mizerie, spre prosperitate, spre muncă forțată, spre câmpul de luptă, spre locul de conducere, spre locul de pierzanie: nu-ți face griji; puterea întunecată nu-ți poate da nimic și nu-ți poate lua nimic, dacă singura măsură virtuoasă acționează în tine. Îți poți pierde confortul, bogăția, sănătatea, libertatea, viața; le vei pierde pe toate mai devreme sau mai târziu, nu le poți duce în mormânt; dar măsura perfectă din adâncul tău nu poate fi încălcată nici măcar prin distrugerea lumii, așa că trebuie să dorești să fii fidel ei. Încrede-te în măsura eternă: ea este arca lui Noe deasupra potopului care acoperă totul.
Pentru semenii tăi nu poți face altceva decât să le faci cunoscută singura cale de scăpare. Nimeni nu poate fi salvat prin forță atunci când potopul acoperă totul.
Nu este adevărat că în timpul unui potop mulțimea vrea să urce pe Arca lui Noe. Arca lui Noe pare a fi cea mai slabă, cea mai stângace bucată de lemn, care valorează mai puțin decât un loc sub un tufiș.
