Some man looks upon religion as a barter: it is man's duty to behave himself, to obey God's commands and the ordinances; it is God's business to provide man with earthly goods in the same proportion as he has behaved himself, obeyed the commands, performed the ordinances. Accordingly, the most religious and best men ought to be the richest, and the non-religious and law-breakers ought to be miserable.
He who is religious in order to obtain the goods he covets in return: he has already proved his greed and unworthiness. The goodness of God is not fattening and not a charitable institution. The unvarying radiance of divine love is like nothing less than charity, the gratification of desires. If you can grow out of your desires, you will reach God.

Olyik ember a vallásosságot csereüzletnek nézi: az ember kötelessége, hogy jól viselkedjék, Isten parancsainak és az előírt szertartásoknak eleget tegyen; Isten dolga, hogy az embert ugyanoly arányban lássa el földi javakkal, amennyire jól viselkedett, a parancsokat követte, a szertartásokat elvégezte. Eszerint a legvallásosabb és legjobb embereknek kéne leggazdagabbaknak lenni, s a vallástalanoknak és törvényszegőknek nyomorogni kellene.

Aki úgy vallásos, hogy cserébe hozzájusson a sóvárgott javakhoz: máris bebizonyította kapzsiságát és érdemtelenségét. Isten jósága nem hizlalda és nem jótékonysági intézmény. Az isteni szeretet változatlan sugárzása semmihez nem hasonlít kevésbe, mint a jótékonykodáshoz, a vágyak kielégítéséhez. Ha vágyaid közül ki tudsz bontakozni, akkor éred el Istent.

Sunt oameni care privesc religia ca pe un troc: este datoria omului să se comporte, să se supună poruncilor lui Dumnezeu și rânduielilor; este treaba lui Dumnezeu să îi ofere omului bunuri pământești în aceeași proporție în care el s-a comportat, a ascultat poruncile, a îndeplinit rânduielile. În consecință, cei mai religioși și cei mai buni oameni ar trebui să fie cei mai bogați, iar cei nereligioși și cei care încalcă legile ar trebui să fie mizerabili.
Cel care este religios pentru a obține în schimb bunurile pe care le râvnește: el și-a dovedit deja lăcomia și nevrednicia. Bunătatea lui Dumnezeu nu este îngrășare și nu este o instituție caritabilă. Strălucirea invariabilă a iubirii divine nu seamănă cu nimic altceva decât cu caritatea, cu satisfacerea dorințelor. Dacă reușești să crești în afara dorințelor tale, vei ajunge la Dumnezeu.
