It is not much, because man in general, and the writer of this book in particular, knows little about anything but himself and the world. But it is enough for a human task. We cannot aspire to more in life.

The author does not want to teach when he writes this book, but to learn. He wants to learn from the books written by the wise and the initiated before him, he wants to learn from the life of men as far as he has been able to observe and understand it, he wants to learn from the signs of life, that is, from the letter, from the human heart, from the herbs and from the signs of the heavens all at once. Because all these together shape human destiny. It is not a book of science, just the kind they teach in elementary school. Olvasó, ez a könyv szeretne őszinte lenni. Egy ember írta, kinek tudása szerény és véges. Nem akar mást ez a könyv, mint mind a megszámlálhatatlan könyvek, melyek a régmúlt és félmúlt időben beszélni akartak az ember sorsáról a világban. Szeretné elmondani egy ember, hogyan kell lakni, enni, inni, aludni, betegnek lenni és egészségesnek maradni, szeretni és unatkozni, készülni a halálra és megbékélni az élettel. Nem sok ez, mert az ember általában s e könyv írója különösen keveset tud csak önmagáról és a világról. De emberi feladatnak elég. Többre nem is vállalkozhatunk az életben.

Ez a könyv tehát őszinte lesz, olvasó, s nem eszmékről és hősökről beszél majd, hanem csak arról, aminek köze van az emberhez. Írója nem tanítani akar, amikor e könyvet írja, hanem tanulni. A könyvekből akar tanulni, melyeket előtte írtak a bölcsek és a beavatottak, az emberek életéből akar tanulni, amennyire azt megfigyelni és megértenie sikerült, az élet jeleiből akar tanulni, tehát a betűből, az emberi szívből, a füvekből és az égi jelekből egyszerre. Mert mindez együtt alakítja az emberi sorsot. Nem tudós könyv ez, csak olyan, amilyent az elemiben tanítanak. Aki írta, nem ismeri a feltétlen igazságot és gyakran téved a részletekben. Mert ember. De keresi a feltétlen igazságot, s nem röstelli, ha téved a részletekben. Mert ember. Olyasféle lesz hát ez a könyv, mint a régi füves könyvek, melyek egyszerű példákkal akartak felelni a kérdésekre, mit is kell tenni, ha valakinek a szíve fáj, vagy elhagyta az Isten. S aki jobban tudja, mondja jobban.

Cititorule, această carte vrea să fie sinceră. Este scrisă de un om ale cărui cunoștințe sunt modeste și limitate. Această carte nu vrea nimic mai mult decât toate nenumăratele cărți care au încercat să vorbească despre destinul omului în lume în trecutul îndepărtat și în trecutul recent. Autorul nu vrea să predea atunci când scrie această carte, ci să învețe. Vrea să învețe din cărțile scrise de înțelepții și inițiații dinaintea sa, vrea să învețe din viața oamenilor, în măsura în care a putut să o observe și să o înțeleagă, vrea să învețe din semnele vieții, adică din litere, din inima omului, din ierburi și din semnele cerului, toate la un loc. Pentru că toate acestea împreună modelează destinul uman. Nu este o carte de știință, așa cum se învață în școala primară. Cel care a scris-o nu cunoaște adevărul absolut și se înșală adesea în detalii. Pentru că este om. Dar el caută adevărul absolut și nu-i pare rău atunci când se înșeală în detalii. Pentru că este om. Așa că această carte va fi la fel ca vechile ierbarii, care încercau să răspundă cu exemple simple la întrebări despre ce să faci atunci când te doare inima sau când Dumnezeu te-a părăsit.
