Voluntary vows to ourselves - "from tomorrow I will not do this or that, I will live this way or that, I will do this or that" - should perhaps be considered even more carefully than our word to people. For the word given to men may be withdrawn if we find that the world changes around our word, that human things are differently situated around the idea once confessed as truth and professed in a vow. The truth changes too. But the word given to ourselves means that we have made a contract with our character which does not change, and therefore we cannot change the contract we have made with it. If the world despises us because we have not been able to keep our given word for some conscientious reason, this despising can be survived, because the world is not a moral contracting party either. However, if we deceive our character, we may still have a way to survive, but our inner conduct will be insecure, guilty, and fluctuating.

Az önmagunknak tett önkéntes fogadalmakat – „holnaptól nem teszem ezt vagy azt, így vagy úgy élek, ezzel vagy azzal foglalkozom" – talán még alaposabban meg kell fontolni, mint az embereknek adott szavunkat. Mert az embereknek adott szót vissza is vonhatjuk, ha úgy látjuk, hogy a világ változik szavunk körül, másképpen helyezkednek el az emberi dolgok az egyszer igazságnak megismert és fogadalomban megvallott eszme körül. Az igazság is változik. De az önmagunknak adott szó annyit jelent, hogy szerződést kötöttünk jellemünkkel, mely nem változik, s ezért a vele kötött szerződést sincs módunk megváltoztatni. Ha a világ megvet, mert valamilyen lelkiismereti okból nem tudtuk megtartani adott szavunkat, ezt a megvetést túl lehet élni, mert a világ sem erkölcsös szerződő fél. De ha jellemünket csaljuk meg, akkor is van ugyan módunk továbbélni, de belső magatartásunk bizonytalan lesz, bűntudatos és ingadozó.

Jurămintele voluntare față de noi înșine - „de mâine nu voi mai face asta sau aia, voi trăi în acest fel sau în altul, voi face asta sau aia” - ar trebui, probabil, să fie luate în considerare chiar mai atent decât cuvântul nostru față de oameni. Pentru că cuvântul dat oamenilor poate fi retras dacă descoperim că lumea se schimbă în jurul cuvântului nostru, că lucrurile umane sunt situate diferit în jurul ideii mărturisite odată ca adevăr și mărturisite într-un jurământ. Adevărul se schimbă și el. Dar cuvântul dat nouă înșine înseamnă că am făcut un contract cu caracterul nostru care nu se schimbă și, prin urmare, nu putem schimba contractul pe care l-am făcut cu el. Dacă lumea ne disprețuiește pentru că nu am fost capabili să ne ținem cuvântul dat dintr-un motiv conștient, acest dispreț poate fi supraviețuit, pentru că nici lumea nu este o parte contractuală morală. Însă dacă ne înșelăm caracterul, s-ar putea să mai avem o cale de supraviețuire, dar conduita noastră interioară va fi instabilă, vinovată și oscilantă.
