Whenever I have been attacked and chased - and in the course of a writer's career these chases inevitably recur, sometimes with life-threatening twists and turns - I have found that the writer under attack cannot be protected by any outside help. Not by the powers that be, not by the courts, not by the help of his peers, not even by the voluntary encouragement of well-meaning people and the wisdom of the experienced. The writer is protected only by his works. It is not even the quality of his works, which is always uneven, but the intention that shines through the work of a writer's life. It is this mysterious radiance and power that gives the writer a kind of - relative - inviolability. A writer can only fail if it can be proved that the intention of his work is not sincere. Then the writer and his work commit hara-kiri. Everything else counts for little: neither the accusation nor the defense.

Valahányszor hajszát és támadásokat indítottak ellenem – s egy írói pálya során ezek a hajszák elkerülhetetlenül ismétlődnek, néha életveszélyes fordulatokkal –, tapasztaltam, hogy a megtámadott írót semmiféle külső segítség nem védheti meg. Sem a hatalom, sem a bíróság, sem a pályatársak segítsége, még a jóindulatú emberek önkéntes felbuzdulása és a tapasztaltak bölcsessége sem. Az írót egyes-egyedül csak művei védik. Még csak nem is művei minősége, mely mindig egyenetlen, hanem a szándék, mely egy írói élet munkáján átvilágít. Ez a rejtélyes sugár és erő, mely valamilyen – viszonylagos – sérthetetlenséget ad az írónak. Az író csak abban bukhat el, ha bizonyítani tudják, hogy munkájának szándéka nem őszinte. Akkor az író és műve harakirit követnek el. Minden más nem számít sokat: a vád sem, a védelem sem.

De fiecare dată când am fost atacat și urmărit - și în cursul carierei unui scriitor aceste urmăriri se repetă inevitabil, uneori cu răsturnări de situație care pun viața în pericol - am constatat că scriitorul atacat nu poate fi protejat de niciun ajutor din afară. Nici de puterile în stat, nici de tribunale, nici de ajutorul colegilor săi, nici măcar de încurajarea voluntară a oamenilor bine intenționați și de înțelepciunea celor cu experiență. Scriitorul este protejat doar de operele sale. Nu este vorba nici măcar de calitatea operelor sale, care este întotdeauna inegală, ci de intenția care strălucește prin opera vieții unui scriitor. Această strălucire și putere misterioasă este cea care îi conferă scriitorului un fel de - relativă - inviolabilitate. Un scriitor poate eșua doar dacă se poate dovedi că intenția operei sale nu este sinceră. Atunci scriitorul și opera sa își fac hara-kiri. Orice altceva contează prea puțin: nici acuzația, nici apărarea.
