Smart people always wear me down and exhaust me. In their company, I felt like I was taking some kind of bad-faith exam. I had to watch them forever because they were watching me, from under their narrowed eyelashes, like a hunter watching the game, to see if I was responding correctly to their clever remarks, if I was clever enough for them, the clever ones, to talk to me. No, the clever ones always tire me. And I never learned anything of substance from them. Mostly they just explained why something was not good: life, the work of a man, spring or autumn? But that life is good, death is natural, man is not quite hopeless, they never said; for they were clever.

Cleverness is not wisdom. Smartness is a skill, the agility of the nervous system, and intellect. Wisdom is truth, reassurance, forbearance, objectivity, and acquiescence. Clever men are never wise, they are too excited for that, they are as it were constantly intoxicated with their cleverness; but wise men are always clever, and at the same time more than clever, because they do not want to prove anything. Avoid the company of the wise, for they excite you and eventually offend you. Seek the company of the wise. You can talk to the clever ones. The wise ones can be listened to.

Az okos emberek mindig fárasztottak, kimerítettek. Társaságukban úgy éreztem magam, mint valamilyen rosszhiszemű vizsgán. Örökké figyelnem kellett, mert ők is figyeltek engem, összehúzott szempillák alól, mint a vadász a vadat, vajon helyesen felelek-e okos megjegyzéseikre, elég okos vagyok-e ahhoz, hogy ők, az okosak, szóba álljanak velem? Az okosság nem bölcsesség. Az okosság készség, idegrendszerbeli és értelmi fürgeség. A bölcsesség az igazság, a megnyugvás, az elnézés, a tárgyilagosság és a beleegyezés. Az okos emberek soha nem bölcsek, túl izgatottak ehhez, mintegy állandóan megrészegednek okosságuktól; de a bölcsek mindig okosak is, s ugyanakkor többek ezeknél, mert nem akarnak bizonyítani semmit. Az okosak társaságát kerüld, mert felizgatnak és végül megsértenek. A bölcsek társaságát keresd. Az okosakkal lehet beszélni. A bölcsekkel lehet hallgatni.

Oamenii deștepți întotdeauna mă obosesc, mă epuizează. În compania lor, mă simțeam ca și cum aș fi susținut un fel de examen malițios. Trebuia să privesc la nesfârșit, pentru că și ei mă priveau pe mine, de sub genele lor înguste, ca un vânător care urmărește vânatul, pentru a vedea dacă răspund corect la remarcile lor inteligente, dacă sunt suficient de inteligent pentru ca ei, cei deștepți, să vorbească cu mine. Nu, cei deștepți m-au obosit întotdeauna. Și nu am învățat niciodată nimic important de la ei. De cele mai multe ori explicau doar de ce ceva nu e bun: viața, munca unui om, primăvara sau toamna? Dar că viața este bună, că moartea este firească, că omul nu este chiar fără speranță, nu spuneau niciodată; pentru că erau deștepți.

Inteligența nu este înțelepciune. Inteligența este îndemânare, agilitate a sistemului nervos și a intelectului. Înțelepciunea este adevăr, reasigurare, toleranță, obiectivitate și consimțământ. Oamenii deștepți nu sunt niciodată înțelepți, sunt prea entuziasmați pentru asta, sunt ca și cum ar fi în permanență intoxicați cu deștepciunea lor; dar oamenii înțelepți sunt întotdeauna deștepți, și în același timp spre deosebire de cei deștepți, ei nu vor să demonstreze nimic. Evitați compania deștepților, pentru că ei vă excită și în cele din urmă vă jignesc. Căutați compania înțelepților. Puteți vorbi cu deștepții. Pe cei înțelepți îi puteți asculta.
