"Tao jest prázdné, přitom ten, kdo ho používá, nesmí být plným. Jak je hluboké! Podobá se deseti tisíc věcí předkovi. Láme svoje hroty, rozmotává své závitky, slaďuje svůj lesk, vyrovnává se svému prášku. Jak je klidné! Podobá se jen, jako by tu (něco) bylo. Nevím, čí jest synem. Zdá se, že bylo před (nejvyšším) pánem."

Ein Abgrund, oh!, gleicht es aller Wesen Urvater. »Es bricht seine Schärfe, Streut aus seine Fülle, Macht milde sein Glänzen, Wird eins seinem Staube«. Tiefstill – gleich wie wenn es da währe. Ich weiß nicht wessen Sohn es ist. Es zeigt sich als Vorgänger des Herrn."

"The Tao is (like) the emptiness of a vessel; and in our employment of it we must be on our guard against all fulness. How deep and unfathomable it is, as if it were the Honoured Ancestor of all things! We should blunt our sharp points, and unravel the complications of things; we should attemper our brightness, and bring ourselves into agreement with the obscurity of others. How pure and still the Tao is, as if it would ever so continue! I do not know whose son it is. It might appear to have been before God."

(Csak azt tudom, hogy) mint képmás (hsziang), az ősöket is megelőzi."

Если притупить его проницательность, освободить его от беспорядка, умерить его блеск, уподобь его пылинке, то оно будет казаться ясно существующим. Я не знаю, чье оно порождение, [я лишь знаю, что] оно предшествует небесному владыке."

"Đạo không hư dùng muôn đời không cạn, Sâu ngàn trùng, sinh ngàn vạn chúng sinh. Dấu sâu sắc, gỡ cho hết mối manh, Pha ánh sáng hòa mình cùng trần cấu. Nhưng trong trẻo, muôn đời không nhơ dấu, Ta chẳng hay, ngài sinh xuất từ đâu, Trước Thiên đế, (trước muôn ngàn hiện tượng)."
