But as long as you think there's a heart beating somewhere that beats for you, forgive people. A human heart that feels unselfishly toward you is enough to forgive all those whose selfish and wicked hearts you have known; enough to forgive all men. It does not take much to be forgiven in the midst of this hopelessness. One man is enough. Nor is it true that you have not met this man. You were just nervous, or impatient and greedy, and went away. Because you are human, and because that is the human heart.

De amíg azt hiszed, hogy dobog valahol egy szív, mely érted dobog, bocsáss meg az embereknek. Egy emberi szív, mely önzetlenül érez irányodban, elég, hogy megbocsáss mindazoknak, kiknek önző és komisz szívét megismerted; elég, hogy megbocsáss az emberek összességének. Nem kell sok ahhoz, hogy e reménytelenség közepette megengeszteljenek. Egy ember elég. S nem igaz az sem, hogy nem találkoztál ezzel az emberrel. Dar atâta timp cât crezi că undeva bate o inimă care bate pentru tine, iartă oamenii. O inimă de om care simte dezinteresat față de tine este suficientă pentru a-i ierta pe toți cei ale căror inimi egoiste și rele le-ai cunoscut; suficientă pentru a-i ierta pe toți oamenii. Nu este nevoie de mult pentru a fi iertat în mijlocul acestei disperări. Un singur om este suficient. Nici nu este adevărat că nu l-ai cunoscut pe acest om. Ai fost doar nervos, sau nerăbdător și lacom, și ai plecat. Pentru că ești om și pentru că așa este inima omului.
