How greediness injures

"民之飢者以其上食税之多也， 是以飢。 民之難治者以其上之有爲也， 是以難治。 民之輕死者以其上求生生之厚也， 是以輕死。 夫惟無以生爲貴者， 是賢於貴生也。"

"The people suffer from famine because of the multitude of taxes consumed by their superiors. It is through this that they suffer famine. The people are difficult to govern because of the (excessive) agency of their superiors (in governing them). It is through this that they are difficult to govern. The people make light of dying because of the greatness of their labours in seeking for the means of living. It is this which makes them think light of dying. Thus it is that to leave the subject of living altogether out of view is better than to set a high value on it."

Seul celui qui n'est pas réduit à lutter pour vivre peut apprécier sagement la vie. Le Sage ne vit pas que pour vivre Ainsi il peut en apprécier la valeur."

"A nép azért éhezik, mert a fölötte állók (sang) túlságosan sok adógabonát (suj) esznek. Csak ezért éhezik. A népet azért nehéz kormányozni, mert a fölötte állók sokat tevékenykednek. Csak ezért nehéz kormányozni. A nép azért veszi semmibe a halált, mert (a fölötte állók) oly mohón habzsolják az életet. Csak ezért veszi semmibe a halált. S bizony, aki semmit sem tesz az életéért, az bölcs igazán az élet becsülésében (kuj seng)."

Народ презирает смерть оттого, что у него слишком сильно стремление к жизни. Вот почему презирают смерть. Тот, кто пренебрегает своей жизнью, тем самым ценит свою жизнь."

"Vì đâu dân phải cơ hàn ? Người trên sưu thuế đi bòn của dân. Sưu cao dân mới phong trần, Thuế cao dân mới kém ăn hao gầy. Dân mà ngang ngạnh bài bây, Là vì đã bị quát quay quá nhiều. Người trên sinh chuyện đến điều, Cho nên dân mới đâm liều phá ngang. Dân càng thích sống đàng hoàng, Lại càng vong mạng dễ dàng như không. Cho nên ai sống ung dung, Hẳn là hơn kẻ lao lung tối ngày."
