"Deși artistul poate rămâne toată viața lui mai atașat, ca să nu spun mai fidel, copilăriei sale, decât omul aplecat spre realitatea practică a vieții, deși, s-ar putea spune că, spre deosebire de acesta din urmă, el rămâne necontenit în stare de visare, de puritate omenească jucăușă a copilului, totuși calea lui, de la începuturile imaculate și până la etapele imprevizibile de mai târziu ale destinului său, este nesfârșit mai largă, mai aventuroasă, și, pentru un spectator, mai zguduitoare decât aceea a burghezului oarecare, iar la acesta din urmă gândul ci a fost și el odată copil nu e nici pe departe atât de înlăcrimat."
