When the highest type of men hear Tao, The diligently practice it. When the average type of men hear Tao, They half believe in it.
When the lowest type of men hear Tao, They laugh heartily at it. If they did not laugh at it, it would not be Tao.
Therefore there is the established saying: The Tao which is bright appears to be dark. The Tao which goes forward appears to fall backward. The Tao which is level appears uneven. Great virtue appears like a valley (hollow). Great purity appears like disgrace. Far-reaching virtue appears as if insufficient.
Solid virtue appears as if unsteady. True substance appears to be changeable. The great square has no corners. The great implement (or talent) is slow to finish (or mature). Great music sounds faint. Great form has no shape.
Tao is hidden and nameless. Yet it is Tao alone that skillfully provides for all and brings them to perfection.

Ha kiváló képességű ember (sang-si) a tao-ról hall, minden erejével igyekszik azt megvalósítani (a maga gyakorlatában). Ha közepes képességű ember (csung-si) a tao-ról hall, hol megőrzi, hol meg elveszíti (a hallottakat). Ha pedig alantas képességű ember (hszia-si) hall a tao-ról, nagyot nevet rajta. Ha nem nevetne rajta, (az, amiről hallott) meg sem érdemelné, hogy tao-nak nevezzék.
Ezért született a mondás: "A világosság útja (tao): mintha sötét lenne; az előre vivő út (tao): mintha visszafelé haladna; a sima út (tao): mintha hepehupás lenne; a magas erény (sang-tö): mintha közönséges lenne; a légfehérebb: mintha maszatos lenne; a hatalmas erény: mintha fogyatékos lenne; az erény erősítése: mintha gyengítése lenne; a természetes állapot: mintha (színes lenne, csak színe) megfakult volna." A legnagyobb négyszögnek (ta-fang) nincsenek sarkai, a hatalmas edény (ta-csi) csak sokára készül el, a hatalmas zene (ta-jin) alig ad hangot, s a hatalmas képnek (ta-hsziang) nincsen alakja (hszing). A tao rejtett, és nincsen neve. Mégis csak a tao tud támogatni (taj) és beteljesedéshez juttatni (minden létezőt).
