There is no more hypocritical saying than when a person encourages himself like this: I want to know what I am holding on to. Basically, we don't want to know at all. We fear it. Contributing to the fear is some vague desire to find out the truth only as later as possible. We don't admit this to ourselves, but we would like to turn back, and if we ran too far ahead, we reproach ourselves.
