Every sage whose thought I have ever known has taught me that we should live and write as if every action we take in life is our last as if every sentence we write is followed by death. Only the awareness of death without emotion, without fear, without unwise cowardice, gives our life and our writing a true attitude. We must live and write in a fatal way, that is, calmly, very attentively, with equal attention to the world and to ourselves, to our intellect and our passions, to the intentions of men and to our relations with the universe. This is the only conduct worthy of man: God requires no more of us. And there is no greater sin and vainer temptation than to want more or less than God requires of us.

Minden bölcs, kinek gondolatait megismernem sikerült, arra tanított, hogy élni és írni úgy kell, mintha minden cselekedetünk utolsó lenne az életben, mintha minden leírott mondatunk után a halál tenne pontot. Csak a halál érzelgés, félelem és oktalan gyávaság nélkül való tudata ad életünknek és írásunknak igazi magatartást. Végzetesen kell élni és írni, tehát nyugodtan, nagyon figyelmesen, egyforma erővel figyelve a világra és önmagunkra, értelmünkre és szenvedélyeinkre, az emberek szándékaira és a mindenséghez való kapcsolatainkra. Ez az egyetlen emberhez méltó magatartás: többet Isten sem kíván tőlünk. S nincs nagyobb bűn és hiúbb kísérlet, mint többet vagy mást akarni, mint amit Isten kíván tőlünk.

Fiecare înțelept a cărui gândire am cunoscut-o vreodată m-a învățat că trebuie să trăim și să scriem ca și cum fiecare acțiune pe care o facem în viață ar fi ultima, ca și cum fiecare frază pe care o scriem ar fi urmată de moarte. Doar conștientizarea morții fără emoție, fără teamă, fără lașitate nesăbuită, dă vieții și scrisului nostru o atitudine adevărată. Trebuie să trăim și să scriem într-un mod fatal, adică calm, foarte atent, cu aceeași atenție la lume și la noi înșine, la intelectul nostru și la pasiunile noastre, la intențiile oamenilor și la relațiile noastre cu universul. Aceasta este singura conduită demnă de om: Dumnezeu nu cere mai mult de la noi. Și nu există păcat mai mare și ispită mai deșartă decât să vrem mai mult sau mai puțin decât ne cere Dumnezeu.
