The real experience for man is first and foremost this: to know himself. To know the world is interesting, useful, delightful, frightening or instructive; to know oneself is the greatest journey, the most frightening discovery, the most instructive encounter. To go to Rome or the North Pole is not as interesting as to learn something real about our character, that is, about the true nature of our inclinations, our relationship to the world, to good and evil, to people, to passions. When my intellect was mature enough to do that, that was the only experience I was looking for in life.

Az igazi élmény az ember számára tehát elsőrendűen ennyi: önmagának megismerése. A világ megismerése érdekes, hasznos, gyönyörködtető, félelmes vagy tanulságos; önmagunk megismerése a legnagyobb utazás, a legfélelmesebb felfedezés, a legtanulságosabb találkozás. Rómában vagy az Északi Sarkon járni nem olyan érdekes, mint megtudni valami valóságosat jellemünkről, tehát hajlamaink igazi természetéről, a világhoz, a jóhoz és rosszhoz, az emberekhez, a szenvedélyekhez való viszonyunkról. Mikor értelmem eléggé megérett erre, már csak ezt az élményt kerestem az életben.

Adevărata experiență pentru om este, în primul rând, aceasta: să se cunoască pe sine. A cunoaște lumea este interesant, util, încântător, înfricoșător sau instructiv; a te cunoaște pe tine însuți este cea mai mare călătorie, cea mai înfricoșătoare descoperire, cea mai instructivă întâlnire. A merge la Roma sau la Polul Nord nu este la fel de interesant ca a învăța ceva real despre caracterul nostru, adică despre adevărata natură a înclinațiilor noastre, despre relația noastră cu lumea, cu binele și răul, cu oamenii, cu pasiunile. Când intelectul meu a fost suficient de matur pentru a face asta, asta a rămas tot ce am căutat în viață.
