I know people whose education I admire, whose wit surprises me, and yet being with them is mysteriously exhausting. And I know other kinds of people who are perhaps not particularly clever or cultured, who never say anything surprising or original, and yet after meeting them, I part from them as one who has received something.
It seems that a man is not only his education and his wit but also a kind of current that radiates from his personality with varying strength and abundance. There are people with no current, who are always drawing the current from their environment. They are like the power thieves who, with the help of a wire, steal the electricity from the neighbor's wiring to their own room or factory, which makes their house brighter and their factory more industrious. Such people make me tired. All the time they have been talking, and in the end you, the listening companion, part from them poor and exhausted. They should be avoided.

Ismerek embereket, kiknek műveltségét csodálom, észjárásuk meglep, s a velük való együttlét mégis rejtélyesen kimerít. S ismerek másféle embereket, kik talán nem is különösebben okosak vagy műveltek, nem mondanak soha semmi meglepőt vagy eredetit, s találkozás után mégis úgy válok el tőlük, mint aki kapott valamit.
Úgy látszik, egy ember nemcsak a műveltsége, szelleme, hanem egyfajta áram is, mely változó erővel s bőséggel sugárzik az egyéniségből. Vannak áramszegény emberek, akik mindegyre elvonják környezetükből az erőket. Olyanok ezek, mint az áramtolvajok, akik egy dróthuzal segítségével a szomszéd lakás vezetékéből lopják át a maguk szobájába vagy üzemük számára az áramot, melytől lakásuk fényesebb, üzemük iparképesebb lesz. Az ilyen emberek kifárasztanak. Mindvégig ők beszéltek, s végül te, a hallgató társ, szegényen és kimerülten válsz el tőlük. Ezeket kerülni kell.

Cunosc oameni a căror educație o admir, a căror inteligență mă surprinde și, cu toate acestea, să fiu cu ei este în mod misterios epuizant. Cunosc și alte tipuri de oameni care poate că nu sunt deosebit de inteligenți sau cultivați, care nu spun niciodată nimic surprinzător sau original, și totuși, după ce îi întâlnesc, mă despart de ei ca unul care a primit ceva.
Se pare că un om nu este doar educația și inteligența sa, ci și un fel de curent care radiază din personalitatea sa cu forță și abundență diferite. Există oameni fără curent, care extrag mereu curentul din mediul lor. Ei sunt precum hoții de curent care, cu ajutorul unui fir, fură electricitatea din instalația electrică a vecinului pentru a o duce în propria cameră sau fabrică, ceea ce face casa lor mai luminoasă și fabrica lor mai harnică. Astfel de oameni mă obosesc. Tot timpul au vorbit, iar în final tu, tovarășul care ascultă, te desparți de ei sărac și epuizat. Ei ar trebui evitați.
