Don't be ashamed if you love animals. Don't be afraid if a dog is closer to your soul than most people you know personally. It is lying prophets and gross, wicked men who reproach you for this affection, saying, "Steal from men the feelings you lavish on the dog! Selfish, cold-hearted fellow!" - Never mind them. Love your dog, this bright-eyed, tireless friend, who asks nothing more for his friendship than a modest treat and a petting or two. Don't think that tenderness and selfishness make you love animals. They are our brothers and sisters, made in the same workshop as humans, and they have a mind, sometimes more complex and subtle than most humans. Others call animal love a weakness, and mock us for it - you just walk your dog. You will be in good company, and God knows this.

Ne szégyelld te azt, ha szereted az állatokat. Ne röstelld, ha egy kutya közelebb van lelkedhez, mint a legtöbb ember, akit személyesen ismersz. Hazug próféták és otromba, komisz emberek azok, akik megrónak e vonzalom miatt, s ezt mondják: „Az emberektől lopja el az érzéseket, melyeket a kutyára pazarol! Önző, rideg fráter!" – ne törődj velük. Szeresd csak nyugodtan kutyádat, ezt a csillogó szemű, fáradhatatlan barátodat, aki nem kér barátságáért mást és többet, mint valamilyen szerény koncot és egy-egy simogatást. Ne hidd, hogy gyöngédség és önzés késztet az állatokat szeretni. Testvéreink ők, s ugyanabban a műhelyben készültek, mint az ember, s értelmük is van, néha bonyolultabb és finomabb, mint a legtöbb embernek. Mások nevezzék gyöngeségnek az állatszeretetet, gúnyoljanak ezért – te sétálj csak kutyáddal. Jó társaságban maradsz; s Isten tudja ezt.

Nu vă fie rușine dacă iubiți animalele. Nu te teme dacă un câine este mai aproape de sufletul tău decât majoritatea oamenilor pe care îi cunoști personal. Profeții mincinoși și oamenii grosolani și răi sunt cei care îți reproșează această afecțiune, spunând: „Fură de la oameni sentimentele pe care le prodigi câinelui! Egoist, om cu inimă rece!” - Nu-i băgați în seamă. Iubiți-vă câinele, acest prieten cu ochi strălucitori, neobosit, care nu cere nimic mai mult pentru prietenia sa decât un tratament modest și o mângâiere. Nu credeți că tandrețea și egoismul vă fac să iubiți animalele. Ele sunt frații și surorile noastre, făcute în același atelier ca și oamenii, și au o minte, uneori mai complexă și mai subtilă decât majoritatea oamenilor.
