That tact and tenderness which, like some wonderful hearing of music, forever warns a man what is too much and what is too little in human things, what is free and what is too much, what hurts another and what is so good that it makes an enemy if it is given and cannot repay? It is a tact that knows not only the right words and emphasis but also the tenderness of listening. There are rare people who know this. Those who have stewed and ennobled kindness, which is always selfishness, and who never hurt by their friendship or sympathy, are not burdensome in their advances, never say a word more than the other can bear, and, as if they had separate, very delicate hearing-organs, sniff out what it is that can hurt the other? And they can always talk of other things. And they hear everything that is dangerous among people as keenly as electric listening ears detect invisible enemy birds approaching in the clouds at high altitudes. Tact and tenderness are perceived with superhuman perception. Yes, these two faculties are superhuman.

Mert van valami, ami több és értékesebb, mint a tudás, az értelem, igen, becsesebb, mint a jóság. Van egyfajta tapintat, ami az emberi teljesítmény felsőfoka. Az a fajta gyöngédség, mely láthatatlan, színtelen és íztelen, s mégis nélkülözhetetlen, mint fertőzéses, járványos vidéken a forralt víz, mely nélkül szomjan pusztul, vagy beteg lesz az ember. Az a tapintat és gyöngédség, mely, mint valamilyen csodálatos zenei hallás, örökké figyelmeztet egy embert, mi sok és mi kevés az emberi dolgokban, mit szabad és mi túlzás, mi fáj a másiknak és mi olyan jó, hogy ellenségünk lesz, ha megajándékozzuk vele és nem tudja meghálálni? Ez a tapintat, mely nemcsak a megfelelő szavakat és hangsúlyt ismeri, hanem a hallgatás gyöngédségét is. Vannak ritka emberek, akik tudják ezt. Akik a jóságot, mely mindig önzés is, párolták és nemesítették, s nem okoznak soha fájdalmat barátságukkal vagy rokonszenvükkel, nem terhesek közeledésükkel, nem mondanak soha egy szóval többet, mint amit a másik el tud viselni, s mintha külön, nagyon finom hallószerveik lennének, úgy neszelik, mi az, ami a másiknak fájhat? S mindig tudnak másról beszélni. S oly élesen hallanak mindent, ami veszélyes az emberek között, mint az elektromos hallgató fülek érzékelik a nagy magasságban, felhők között közeledő, láthatatlan ellenséges gépmadarakat. A tapintat és a gyöngédség emberfölöttien érzékel. Igen, e két képesség emberfölötti.

Pentru că există ceva mai prețios decât cunoașterea, mai prețios decât intelectul, da, mai prețios decât bunătatea. Există un fel de tact care este culmea realizărilor umane.
