Nem nagyon sok idő telik el, s nemcsak neved és személyed feledi el tökéletesen és maradéktalanul a világ, nemcsak műved emlékét lepi be a feledés pora, hanem műved anyaga is elporlad, a könyvek papírja és vászonkötése elillan a semmiségben, a képek, melyeket festettél, nem láthatók többé sehol a világon, s a márványszobrokat, alkotásaidat, finom porrá morzsolta az idő. Mindez egészen biztosan bekövetkezik, s az idő óráján csak másodpercek teltek el, míg te, s minden, amit jelentettél a világban, tökéletesen és maradék nélkül megsemmisül. Mitől félhetsz hát az életben? Mi olyan fontos vagy veszélyes, vagy sajnálnivaló, hogy meghőkölj az igazság elől? Nem értelek.

Nu după mult timp, nu numai numele și persoana ta sunt complet și desăvârșit uitate de lume, nu numai amintirea operei tale este acoperită de praful uitării, dar și materialul muncii tale se descompune, hârtia și legătura de in a cărților tale dispar în neant, tablourile pe care le-ai pictat nu mai sunt vizibile nicăieri în lume, iar statuile de marmură, operele tale, au fost sfărâmate în praf fin de timp. Toate acestea se vor întâmpla cu siguranță, și doar câteva secunde vor trece pe ceasul timpului înainte ca tu și tot ceea ce ai însemnat pentru lume să fiți distruși complet și definitiv. Atunci de ce vă puteți teme în viață? Ce este atât de important, periculos sau regretabil încât să te ferești de adevăr? Eu nu te înțeleg.
