The sovereign man, who has devoted his life to the proclamation and practice of the truths which he has come to know and to accept with all consequences, is naturally always modest and courteous. Even when he proclaims the truth. The chief mark of a sovereign man is that he fears nothing but his conscience, and at the same time is not offended by anything. For he who is offended is neither courageous nor sovereign. He who fears and is offended cannot consistently, to life and death, represent a truth in the world. He who is offended, quarrels. A sovereign man never quarrels, nay, never even argues. He speaks his truth, and then stands his ground, to the last moment, and accepts all that follows from the truth and the impatient misunderstandings of the world. Everyone else just swallows. When you have rank, you must not be afraid. But it is only the untrustworthy who are offended, and those whose opinions of the world are more important than the truth.

A szuverén ember, aki életét föltette az igazságok hirdetésére és gyakorlására, melyeket megismert és minden következménnyel vállal: természetesen mindig szerény és udvarias. Akkor is, amikor az igazságot hirdeti. A szuverén ember legfőbb ismertető jele, hogy nem fél semmitől, csak lelkiismeretétől, s ugyanakkor nem is sértődik meg semmitől. Mert aki megsértődik, nem bátor és nem is szuverén. Aki fél és megsértődik, nem tud egy igazságot következetesen, életre és halálra képviselni a világban. Aki megsértődik, veszekszik. A szuverén ember soha nem veszekszik, igen, mégcsak nem is vitatkozik. Kimondja a maga igazát, s aztán helyén marad, utolsó pillanatig és vállalja mindazt, ami az igazságból és a világ türelmetlen félreértéseiből következik. Mindenki más csak nyelvel. Ha rangod van, nem szabad félni. De megsértődni csak a csiszlikek szoktak, s azok, kiknek a világ véleménye fontosabb, mint az igazság.

Omul suveran, care și-a dedicat viața proclamării și practicării adevărurilor pe care a ajuns să le cunoască și să le accepte cu toate consecințele, este în mod natural întotdeauna modest și politicos. Chiar și atunci când proclamă adevărul. Semnul principal al unui om suveran este că nu se teme de nimic altceva decât de conștiința sa și, în același timp, nu se simte ofensat de nimic. Căci cel care este ofensat nu este nici curajos, nici suveran. Cel care se teme și este ofensat nu poate reprezenta consecvent, pe viață și pe moarte, un adevăr în lume. Cel care este ofensat, se ceartă. Un om suveran nu se ceartă niciodată, ba mai mult, nici măcar nu se ceartă. El își spune adevărul, apoi își menține poziția, până în ultima clipă, și acceptă tot ceea ce rezultă din adevăr și din neînțelegerile nerăbdătoare ale lumii. Toți ceilalți doar înghit. Când ai rang, nu trebuie să-ți fie frică. Dar sunt jigniți doar oamenii de neîncredere și cei ale căror opinii despre lume sunt mai importante decât adevărul.
