We must train our minds and our perceptions to see the unique, the wonderful and the visionary in the ordinary, in the everyday. For miracles are not some moment of heavenly noise, when the heavens open, horns blare, mists float, graves open, and the word of God is heard in the confusion: no, most miracles are quite silent. It passes from one room to another, and you see something: the expression of a man's face; the disposition of an object; and at once the true meaning of that object and its relation to the world is revealed to you; you hear a man's voice as never before, and beyond the indifferent words you understand the secret of that man; that is all a miracle ever is. Not to dive into reality, into the everyday, to see what you have seen so often: this faculty fades in most people, just as the ability to operate certain senses, such as smell, fades in civilised man. See, smell the miracle, right where it is. It is always nearby. Most of the time it is so close, so within your reach, that you will never think of reaching out for it for the rest of your life.

Arra kell nevelnünk eszméletünket és szemléletünket, hogy a köznapiban, a környezőben, a mindennaposban is látni tudjuk az egyszerit, a csodálatosat és a látomásszerűt. Mert a csoda nem valamilyen égzengéses pillanat, mikor megnyílnak az egek, kürtök recsegnek, ködök szállanak, sírok felnyílnak, s a zűrzavarban felhangzik Isten szava: nem, a csoda legtöbbször egészen csendes. Átmegy egyik szobából a másikba, s látsz valamit: egy ember arckifejezését; egy tárgy elhelyezését; s egyszerre feltárul előtted e tárgy igazi értelme és viszonya a világhoz; egy ember hangját hallod, mint soha azelőtt, s a közömbös szavakon túl megérted ez ember titkát; a csoda mindig ennyi csak. Nem belevakulni a valóságba, a mindennaposba, látni azt, amit már oly gyakran láttál: ez a képesség elhal a legtöbb emberben, mint ahogy a civilizált emberben elsatnyul bizonyos érzékszervek működési készsége, például a szaglás. Lásd, szimatold a csodát, ott, ahol éppen van. Mindig a közelben van. Legtöbbször oly közel, annyira a kezed ügyében, hogy egy életen át eszedbe sem jut kinyújtani utána kezed.

Trebuie să ne antrenăm mințile și percepțiile pentru a vedea unicul, minunatul și vizionarul în obișnuit, în cotidian. Căci miracolele nu sunt un moment de zgomot ceresc, când cerurile se deschid, claxoanele răsună, ceața plutește, mormintele se deschid, iar cuvântul lui Dumnezeu se aude în confuzie: nu, majoritatea miracolelor sunt destul de tăcute. Se trece dintr-o cameră în alta și se vede ceva: expresia feței unui om; dispoziția unui obiect; și imediat ți se dezvăluie adevărata semnificație a acelui obiect și relația sa cu lumea; auzi vocea unui om ca niciodată și, dincolo de cuvintele indiferente, înțelegi secretul acelui om; asta este tot ce este un miracol. Să nu plonjezi în realitate, în cotidian, să vezi ceea ce ai văzut de atâtea ori: această facultate dispare la majoritatea oamenilor, la fel cum dispare la omul civilizat capacitatea de a opera anumite simțuri, cum ar fi mirosul. Vedeți, mirosiți miracolul, chiar acolo unde este. Este întotdeauna aproape. De cele mai multe ori este atât de aproape, atât de la îndemână, încât nu vă veți gândi niciodată într-o viață să întindeți mâna după el.
