The greatest tragic temptation of manhood is not woman, but vanity. You want rank, position among men, titles or medals, everything that glitters, that you can hang on your chest in dangling banners, that you can print on your business card in empty and sonorous words. You want an armchair when others are barefoot on the highways and city streets. You want dignity when life for the masses of people is so miserably bleak that most of them lose their dignity. This is the difficult hour in a man's life. Most men fall at this hour. Only those remain men and human beings who can bow down to human misery, who can content themselves with the only rank that man can bear: the rank of work-consciousness and helpfulness, of patient fairness, and reject all that the world can give them in worthless recognition. Think, then, what vile men wear the highest titles and ranks! They flaunt their medals! Stay, untitled and unadorned, man. And then you will indeed have some rank among men. Otherwise, you will be only a dignified or a gracious lord - are you so humble? I thought you would desire more.

A férfikor legnagyobb, tragikus kísértése nem a nő, hanem a hiúság. Egyszerre megrohan a világi éhség: rangot akarsz, helyzetet az emberek között, címet vagy érdemrendet, mindent, ami csillog, amit melledre akaszthatsz fityegőkben, névjegyedre nyomtathatsz üres és hangzatos szavakban. Karosszéket akarsz, mikor a többiek mezítláb tolonganak az országutakon, s a városok flaszterein. Méltóságot akarsz, mikor az élet az emberek tömegei számára oly nyomorúságosan sivár, hogy legtöbben elvesztik emberi méltóságukat is. Ez a nehéz óra a férfiéletben. Legtöbben elbuknak ilyenkor. Csak az marad ember és férfi, aki meg tud hajolni az emberi nyomorúság előtt, beéri az egyetlen ranggal, melyet ember viselhet: a munka tudatának és a segítőkészség, a türelmes méltányosság rangjával, s elutasít mindent, amit a világ értéktelen elismerésben adhat neki. Gondold csak meg ilyenkor, milyen aljas emberek viselik a legmagasabb címeket és rangokat! Hivalkodnak érdemrendekkel! Maradj, címtelenül és dísztelenül, ember. S akkor csakugyan lesz valamilyen rangod az emberek között. Máskülönben csak méltóságos vagy kegyelmes úr leszel – ilyen szerény vagy? Azt hittem, többre vágyol.

Cea mai mare ispită tragică a bărbăției nu este femeia, ci vanitatea. Vrei rang, poziție între bărbați, titluri sau medalii, tot ceea ce strălucește, pe care să ți-l poți agăța pe piept în steaguri atârnate, pe care să le poți imprima pe cartea ta de vizită în cuvinte goale și sonore. Vrei un fotoliu când alții sunt desculți pe autostrăzi și pe străzile orașelor. Vreți demnitate atunci când viața maselor de oameni este atât de mizerabil de sumbră încât cei mai mulți dintre ei își pierd demnitatea. Aceasta este ora dificilă din viața unui bărbat. Majoritatea bărbaților cad în acest moment. Doar acela rămâne un bărbat și un om care se poate pleca în fața mizeriei umane, care se poate mulțumi cu singurul rang pe care un om îl poate purta: rangul conștiinței muncii și al serviabilității, al corectitudinii răbdătoare, și respinge tot ceea ce lumea îi poate oferi ca recunoaștere fără valoare. Gândiți-vă, deci, ce oameni josnici poartă cele mai înalte titluri și ranguri! Își etalează medaliile! Rămâi, omule, fără titluri și fără ornamente. Și atunci vei avea într-adevăr un oarecare rang printre oameni. Altfel, vei fi doar un demn sau un grațios lord - ești atât de umil? Am crezut că îți dorești mai mult.
