Mă gândesc la o scrisoare către Țar pe tema pamântului, scrisoare de cea mai mare importanță, și în același timp mă gândesc cum să-i spun Sofiei Andreevna că Ilia Vasilievici * vrea să primească un salariu mai mare. Una e binele poporului rus, despre care vorbesc cu Țarul, și alta e o mărire a lefii lacheului. Dar a doua e mai importantă decât prima, fiindcă cere participarea și hotărârea mea, pe când pe prima doar o inițiez.
