Dacă am admirat pe cineva găsindu-l desăvârșit și-i descoperim apoi defectele, nu ne vine ușor să-l judecăm cu echitate. E în joc și vanitatea noastră, căci ne-am înșelat și nu vrem s-o recunoaștem, și ne flatează să credem că am fost înșelați dinadins, aruncând astfel toată vina, supărarea și un soi de ură asupra nefericitului, care în fond n-a contribuit cu nimic la faptul că ne-am pripit să-l luăm drept ceea ce nu cerea să fie luat.
