The art of versification tells the poet what he must do as an artist; but the poet, precisely because he is a poet, doesn't he have other obligations? Does he cease to be a man... a member of society. And son of the country? Can he say to himself: I will destroy all my other relationships, maybe I will be only a poet? And if he cannot annihilate these relations, can he neglect the obligations necessarily connected with them? And what reader will want to discover in the poet this arbitrary rupture with himself?...

Arta versificației îi precizează poetului ceea ce trebuie să facă în calitate de artist; dar poetul, tocmai pentru că este poet, nu mai are, cumva și alte obligații? Încetează oare a mai fi om... membru al societății. Și fiu al patriei? Oare își poate spune sieși: îmi voi distruge toate celelalte relații poate oare și voi fi numai poet? Și dacă nu-și poate anihila aceste relații, poate să-și neglijeze obligațiile legate în chip necesar de ele? Și care cititor își va dori să descopere în poet această ruptură arbitrară cu el însuși?...
