My dear sons!
I have written these notes for you. When you were little, I thought to give you a guiding hand in the notes; now that you are grown, I think that the notes will strengthen you in judgment and wisdom.
My childhood was only under supervision until I was 11, and then I always had to burn my finger first when I needed to be taught. Even adults are often hesitant and perplexed by certain questions in life, so how about young people?
If death should overtake me, you will find in these notes my admonishing, watchful, thoughtful soul.

Kedves fiaim!
Ezeket a jegyzeteket nektek írogattam. Míg kicsinyek voltatok, arra gondoltam, hogy vezető kezet nyújtok a jegyzetekben; most hogy már megnőttetek, arra gondolok, hogy erősíteni fognak a jegyzetek az ítéletben, okosságban.
Az én gyermekségem csak 11 éves korig volt vigyázat alatt, azontul mindig meg kellett előbb égetnem az ujjomat, ha okulásra volt szükségem. A felnőtt ember is sokszor áll tétován, tanácstalanul az élet egyes kérdései előtt, hát még az ifjú?
Ha a halál elragad közületek, ezekben a jegyzetekben megtaláljátok az én intő, őrködő, javatokra gondoló lelkemet.

Am scris aceste însemnări pentru voi. Când erați mici, m-am gândit să vă dau o mână călăuzitoare în însemnări; acum că ați crescut, cred că însemnările vă vor întări în judecată și înțelepciune.
Copilăria mea a fost sub supraveghere doar până la vârsta de 11 ani, iar apoi a trebuit întotdeauna să-mi ard mai întâi degetul când trebuia să învăț. Chiar și adulții sunt adesea ezitanți și perplecși în fața anumitor întrebări din viață, ce să mai zicem de tineri?
Dacă moartea mă răpește dintre voi, veți găsi în aceste însemnări sufletul meu sfătuitor, vigilent și gânditor.
