According to my experience, the main characteristic of true happiness is peace: inner peace. It's not some kind of "away" feeling. It's not the lack of emotion either. On the contrary, the peace I speak of is rooted in caring for others and involves a high degree of sensitivity and emotion. (...) The main characteristic of happiness is therefore inner peace. This explains the paradox that while there are people who are dissatisfied despite all material prosperity, others remain happy even in the most difficult circumstances.

Tapasztalatom szerint az igazi boldogság legfőbb jellemzője a béke: a belső béke. Ez nem valamiféle "elszállt" érzés. Nem is az érzelem hiánya. Ellenkezőleg, a béke, amiről beszélek, a másokkal való törődésben gyökerezik, és nagyfokú érzékenységet és érzelmet foglal magába. (...) A boldogság legfőbb jellemzője tehát a belső béke. Ez megmagyarázza azt a paradoxont, hogy míg vannak emberek, akik minden anyagi jólét ellenére elégedetlenek, addig mások a legnehezebb körülmények között is boldogok maradnak.
