It's not because we're so egocentric and narcissistic that we overestimate attention to ourselves. The real reason is that we are the center of our own universe, so we see the world from our own perspective. This leads us to believe that others see the world from our point of view. This is especially true in situations where we are embarrassed, having a bad day, or saying something stupid. In such cases, most of us tend to overestimate the proportion of people watching us.
