I watched Pat get dressed. I have never felt the mystery of a woman's eternal alienation as much as when I followed this silent pacing in front of the mirror, this pondering self-examination, this complete immersion in herself, this slip back into the unconscious instinctual world of the female sex. I could hardly imagine a woman getting dressed while chatting or laughing... and even if she did, she would surely have lacked the secret of eternal elusiveness and the charm that can never be deciphered.

Soha nem éreztem így a nő örök idegenségének titokzatosságát, mint amikor ezt a tükör előtti halk ide-odajárkálást követtem, ezt az eltöprengő önvizsgálatot, ezt a teljes önmagába mélyedést, ezt a visszasiklást a női nem öntudatlan ösztönvilágába. Jóformán el sem tudtam képzelni egy nőt, amint csacsogva vagy nevetgélve öltözik... s ha meg is teszi, bizonyára hiányzott volna belőle az örök megfoghatatlanság titka és soha meg nem fejthető varázsa.
