Every man is faced with two questions of faith here; first, whether it is worth believing in life, secondly, whether it is worth believing in the purpose of life. Everyone answers both questions with such a firm and unhesitating "yes" just because of the simple fact that they are alive, that they can immediately begin to doubt whether they understood the question correctly. It takes so much of his certain, bitter work before he gets back to the point where he can internally say yes to everything, because if he digs deeper into himself, he is rushed by questions to which only confusing and evasive answers are given.

Minden ember két hitkérdéssel szembesül itt; először, hogy érdemes-e hinni az életben, másodszor, hogy érdemes-e hinni az élet céljában. Mindkét kérdésre mindenki már csak azon egyszerű ténynél fogva, hogy él, oly határozott és habozás nélküli "igen"-nel felel, hogy nyomban elfoghatja a kétség, vajon jól értette-e a kérdést. Annyi bizonyos, keserves munkájába kerül, mire újra eljut oda, hogy belsőleg is igent tud mondani mindenre, hiszen ha mélyebbre ás magában, olyan kérdések rohanják meg, amelyekre csak zavaros és kitérő válaszok adódnak.
