"Különös, mit művelt az emberekkel a háború. Mintha elkapott volna minket egy hatalmas gépezet. Az ember nem szabad akaratából cselekedett, ugyanakkor esze ágában nem volt ebből kitörni. Ha ez nem így volna, egyetlen háború sem tarthatna három hónapnál tovább. A hadsereg egyszerűen összecsomagolna és hazamenne. Miért vonultam be? És miért vonult be a másik egymillió hülye még a kötelező katonai szolgálat előtt? Részben a móka kedvéért, részben pedig az "Anglia, én Angliám", az "uralkodj, Britannia", és a többi maszlag miatt.
