It's strange what war has done to people. It was as if we were caught by a huge machine. The man did not act of his own free will, but at the same time he had no intention of breaking out of it. If it were not so, no war could last more than three months. The army would simply pack up and go home. Why did I enlist? And why did the other one million idiots enlist before the mandatory military service? Partly for fun, and partly for "England, my England", "reign, Britannia" and other pranks. But how long did it last? Once you were caught by the machine, it did what it wanted with you.

Különös, mit művelt az emberekkel a háború. Mintha elkapott volna minket egy hatalmas gépezet. Az ember nem szabad akaratából cselekedett, ugyanakkor esze ágában nem volt ebből kitörni. Ha ez nem így volna, egyetlen háború sem tarthatna három hónapnál tovább. A hadsereg egyszerűen összecsomagolna és hazamenne. Miért vonultam be? És miért vonult be a másik egymillió hülye még a kötelező katonai szolgálat előtt? Részben a móka kedvéért, részben pedig az "Anglia, én Angliám", az "uralkodj, Britannia", és a többi maszlag miatt. De meddig tartott? Ha egyszer elkapott a gépezet, azt tett veled, amit akart.
