The real cause of most human misfortune, misery, hopeless, shameful and unfortunate human situations is most often not the evil of people, but simply stupidity. That certain "slothfulness for good" of which the Bible speaks. A murderer is a rather rare human phenomenon. Murder requires strength, personality, imagination, great passions. Murderers can be defended against. The more common one, the one against whom there is no defence, the one who breeds human misery and tragedy by the millions, is the pious and tuneful man who turns his head when he sees something vile or unjust, who does not pick up the phone, even if he could help by this warning, he walks carefully round human misery and passes it by without a word, when he could, without any great sacrifice or effort, restore a man's zest for life or help a wretch. The man who goes to war with the world for his own tyranny is not so dangerous as the polite, sly and prudent mediocrity, the humming mediocrity, the cowardly and lazy selfishness. That is the cardinal sin. This is the kind of man who makes the world what it is, and to him we owe it if, in the light of this experience, we bid farewell to the human world at the hour of our death without any particular regret.

A legtöbb emberi szerencsétlenség, nyomorúság, a reménytelen, szégyenletes és baljós emberi helyzetek igazi oka leggyakrabban nem is az emberek gonoszsága, hanem egyszerűen a tunyaság. Az a bizonyos „jóra való restség", melyről a Biblia beszél. Egy gyilkos meglehetősen ritka emberi tünemény. A gyilkossághoz már erő kell, egyéniség, képzelőerő, nagy indulatok. Gyilkosok ellen lehet védekezni is. Aki gyakoribb, s aki ellen nem lehet védekezni, s aki az emberi nyomorúságot és tragédiákat milliószámra tenyészti, az a jámbor és tunya ember, aki elfordítja fejét, ha valamilyen aljasságot vagy jogtalanságot lát, nem emeli fel a telefonkagylót, ha segíthetne is e figyelmeztetéssel, óvatosan körüljárja az emberi nyomorúságot és szótlanul odább megy mellőle, holott különösebb áldozat és erőfeszítés nélkül visszaadhatná egy ember kedvét az élethez, vagy segíthetne egy nyomorulton. Az ember, aki harcra kel a világgal a maga zsarnoksága érdekében, nem olyan veszedelmes, mint az udvarias, sunyi és megfontolt középszerűség, a hümmögő középutasság, a gyáva és lusta önzés. Ez a főbűn. Ez a fajta ember csinálja a világot olyanná, amilyen, s neki köszönhetjük, ha e tapasztalatok birtokában különösebb sajnálkozás nélkül búcsúzunk halálunk órájában az emberi világtól.

Cauza reală a celor mai multe nenorociri umane, a mizeriei, a situațiilor umane fără speranță, rușinoase și nefericite nu este de cele mai multe ori răutatea oamenilor, ci pur și simplu prostia. Acea anumită „lene pentru bine” despre care vorbește Biblia. Un ucigaș este un fenomen uman destul de rar. Crima necesită forță, personalitate, imaginație, pasiuni mari. Împotriva criminalilor te poți apăra. Cel mai comun, cel împotriva căruia nu există apărare, cel care generează mizerie și tragedie umană cu milioanele, este omul pios și tonic care întoarce capul când vede ceva josnic sau nedrept, care nu ridică receptorul, chiar dacă ar putea ajuta prin acest avertisment, el ocolește cu grijă mizeria umană și trece pe lângă ea fără să spună nimic, când ar putea, fără mari sacrificii sau eforturi, să redea unui om pofta de viață sau să ajute un nenorocit. Omul care se războiește cu lumea pentru propria sa tiranie nu este atât de periculos ca mediocritatea politicoasă, vicleană și prudentă, mediocritatea fredonată, egoismul laș și leneș. Acesta este păcatul cardinal. Acesta este tipul de om care face ca lumea să fie ceea ce este și lui îi datorăm dacă, în lumina acestei experiențe, ne luăm rămas bun de la lumea umană în ceasul morții noastre fără niciun regret deosebit.
