Whatever happens in the world, remember the truth that the state and political power can never be without the power of philosophers and reason. Nor can it do without it when instinct temporarily rules in community life, or when the departing emperors are replaced by praetorians*. Think always of how Aristotle's education of one gifted man became a world empire? The Macedonian empire was founded by Aristotle as much as Alexander the Great. Never delay when you have to prove the power of reason against political and state power. A state without the leadership of reason is but a horde, and such a state, even in the possession of political power, soon falls to pieces. Only the cohesive power of reason can give shape to the human community. The philosopher may be killed by the state, but he cannot live and survive without it.

Akármi történik is a világban, ne feledkezz meg az igazságról, hogy az állam és a politikai hatalom nem nélkülözheti soha a bölcselők és az értelem hatalmát. Akkor sem nélkülözheti, ha időlegesen az ösztönök uralkodnak a közösségi életben, vagy a lelépő császárok helyét elfoglalják a pretoriánusok *. ők sem tehetnek tartósan semmit az értelem hatalma ellen. Gondolj mindig arra, hogyan lett Arisztotelész neveléséből egy tehetséges emberen át világbirodalom? A macedón birodalmat legalább úgy alapította Arisztotelész, mint Nagy Sándor. Soha ne késlekedjél, mikor a politikai és az államhatalommal szemben bizonyítanod kell az értelem hatalmát. Az állam az értelem vezetése nélkül horda csak, s az ilyen állam a politikai hatalom birtokában is rövidesen alkotóelemeire esik széjjel. Csak az értelem kohéziós ereje tud alakot adni az emberi közösségnek. A filozófust megölheti az állam; de élni és megmaradni nem tud nélküle.

Indiferent ce se întâmplă în lume, amintiți-vă adevărul că statul și puterea politică nu pot fi niciodată lipsite de puterea filosofilor și a rațiunii. Nici nu se poate lipsi de ea atunci când instinctul domnește temporar în viața comunității sau când împărații care pleacă sunt înlocuiți de pretorieni*. Gândiți-vă mereu la modul în care educația dată de Aristotel unui om talentat a devenit un imperiu mondial. Imperiul macedonean a fost fondat de Aristotel la fel de mult ca Alexandru cel Mare. Nu amânați niciodată atunci când trebuie să dovediți puterea rațiunii împotriva puterii politice și de stat. Un stat fără conducerea rațiunii nu este decât o hoardă, iar un astfel de stat, chiar și în posesia puterii politice, se prăbușește curând. Numai puterea de coeziune a rațiunii poate da formă comunității umane. Filosoful poate fi ucis de stat; dar nu poate trăi și supraviețui fără el.
