The writer should not expect anything from the world. All that the world can give - money, wealth, recognition, medals, social honors - will reflect on his work, his spiritual balance, and the moral strength of his work. The writer should not aspire to be a social authority; he loses precisely as much of the moral weight of his work as he rises in social esteem. The writer cannot have any title or rank; he can have only one title and rank, his name. And his only possession in the world is his work. And let him not accumulate money, nor movable or immovable valuables; let him so organize his life that he may be freer in his work, that he may not have to write a single line which he does not feel like writing, and that he may accept only such payment as he may, in his best faith, and without compromise, or regard to social or fashionable considerations, consider the value of his written work. And let him not care whether he "likes" or not what he writes - and let him not care what becomes of his work in life and the afterlife. Let the writer remain poor. And if gold is sometimes thrown at him with a shovel, let him have the strength to turn away from success. And if he is greedily marked with a medal by a hand, let him one-handed refuse the intruders. Never politicize; always judge; and of course, judge yourself first and most severely. Otherwise, you have no right to call yourself a writer.

Az író ne reméljen a világtól semmit. Minden, amit a világ adhat – pénz, vagyon, elismerés, érdemrend, társadalmi kitüntetés –, visszahat munkájára, lelki egyensúlyára, műve erkölcsi erejére. Az író ne akarjon társadalmi tekintély lenni; pontosan annyit veszít műve erkölcsi súlyából, amilyen mértékben emelkedik a társadalmi megbecsülésben. Az írónak nem lehet semmiféle címe, sem rangja; egyetlen címe, rangja lehet csak, a neve. S egyetlen vagyona a világban, a műve. S ne gyűjtsön pénzt, sem ingó és ingatlan értéktárgyakat; szervezze meg úgy életét, hogy munkájában mentől szabadabb legyen, hogy ne kelljen írnia egyetlen sort sem, amihez nincsen kedve, s csak olyan fizetséget fogadjon el, melyet legjobb hite szerint, megalkuvás, társadalmi vagy divatos szempontokra való tekintet nélkül írott munkája ellenértékének tekinthet. S ne törődjön vele, „tetszik-e", vagy sem, amit ír – s ne törődjön vele, mi lesz munkájával életében és holta után. Az író maradjon szegény. S ha néha lapáttal szórják utána az aranyat, legyen ereje elfordulni a sikertől. S ha mohó kézzel tűznek mellére ordókat, utasítsa el félkézzel a tolakodókat. Soha ne politizáljon; mindig ítéljen; s természetesen először és legszigorúbban önmaga felett ítéljen. Máskülönben nincsen joga írónak nevezni magát.

Tot ceea ce lumea poate oferi - bani, bogăție, recunoaștere, medalii, onoruri sociale - se va reflecta asupra operei sale, asupra echilibrului său spiritual, asupra forței morale a operei sale. Scriitorul nu trebuie să aspire să fie o autoritate socială; el pierde exact la fel de mult din greutatea morală a operei sale pe măsură ce crește în stima socială. Scriitorul nu poate avea niciun titlu sau rang; el poate avea un singur titlu și rang, numele său. Iar singura lui avere în lume este opera sa. Și să nu acumuleze bani, nici bunuri mobile sau imobile de valoare; să-și organizeze viața astfel încât să fie mai liber în munca sa, să nu fie nevoit să scrie nici măcar un singur rând pe care nu are chef să-l scrie și să accepte doar plata pe care o consideră, cu cea mai bună credință și fără compromisuri sau considerații sociale sau de modă, valoarea muncii sale scrise. Și să nu-i pese dacă îi „place” sau nu ceea ce scrie - și să nu-i pese ce se întâmplă cu munca sa în viață și după viață. Scriitorul să rămână sărac. Și dacă uneori i se aruncă aur cu lopata, să aibă puterea de a se îndepărta de succes. Iar dacă este marcat lacom cu o insignă de o mână, să refuze cu o singură mână intrușii. Nu politizați niciodată; judecați întotdeauna; și, bineînțeles, judecați-vă mai întâi și cel mai aspru. Altfel nu ai dreptul să te numești scriitor.
