"Începutul teologiei este frica. Iar începutul filozofiei nu este altceva decât gândirea pură și dezinteresată. Dacă oameni ar fi fericiți, atunci nu ar fi nevoie de teologie. Dimpotrivă, filozofia ar fi o necesitate pentru mințile de geniu, chiar dacă în lume nu ar exista deloc suferință și moarte.
