De când cercetăm viața oamenilor, cei mai înțelepți au căutat să definească această muncă și au indicat-o. Toate adevaratele religii și învățături morale au indicat-o, iar ea este mereu aceeași: unirea cu toți și toate și participarea la unirea cu toți și toate, dragostea. Însă, dacă stăpânul ne va răsplăti după moarte pentru buna îndeplinire a muncii, putem doar ghici și crede. Dar e cu atât mai puțin necesar să ghicim cu cât ne îndeplinim munca mai bine și mai mult. Îndeplinirea dăruiește binele, bine în prezent, care exclude orice interes față de viitor."
