The child laughs at things that we don't even smile at, and cries at things that we don't even frown at. A drop of ink, a bug, a stumble, a foreign outfit: he laughs at it. And he cries when his pen is bent, when he's teased, when he's worried, when he's cold. Then, if something pleases him while he's crying, he smiles through his tears.
