To the individual man, pleasure, profit, seems to be the most important thing; he does not distinguish pleasure from good, profit from purpose. He even conceives of the improvement of the destiny of mankind as the putting of as many people as possible in a more pleasant condition. And he conceives of salvation as eternal enjoyment and eternal profit; whereas salvation is the dissolution of the nightmare of the desire for enjoyment and profit.
The desire for pleasure and profit is nothing but an elementary demand arising from your carnal nature; do not let your soul yield to this demand. The soul's elementary need is different: to be in harmony with everything. And the striving for harmony is disturbed by pleasure and profit as soon as it exceeds the need.

Az egyéni-embernek az élvezet, a haszon látszik legkellőbbnek; nem különbözteti meg az élvezetest a jótól, a hasznot a céltól. Még az emberiség sorsának javítását is úgy képzeli, mint mennél több embernek mennél kellemesebb állapotba helyezését. S az üdvösséget úgy képzeli, mint örök élvezetet és örök hasznot; holott az üdvösség az élvezetre és haszonra irányuló kívánság lidércének szétfoszlása.
A kellemességnek és haszonnak kívánása semmi egyéb, mint testi mivoltodból feltörő elemi igény; ne hagyd, hogy lelked is behódoljon ennek az igénynek. A lélek elemi igénye más: mindennel összhangba jutni. S az összhangra-törekvést az élvezet és haszon, mihelyt túllép a szükségleten, megzavarja.

Pentru omul individual, plăcerea, profitul, pare a fi cel mai important lucru; el nu distinge plăcerea de bine, profitul de scop. El concepe chiar îmbunătățirea soartei omenirii ca punerea cât mai multor oameni într-o stare mai plăcută. Și concepe mântuirea ca pe o plăcere eternă și un profit etern; în timp ce mântuirea este dizolvarea coșmarului dorinței de plăcere și profit.
Dorința de plăcere și profit nu este altceva decât o cerință elementară izvorâtă din natura ta carnală; nu lăsa sufletul tău să cedeze acestei cerințe. Nevoia elementară a sufletului este alta: să fie în armonie cu totul. Iar lupta pentru armonie este tulburată de plăcere și profit de îndată ce depășește nevoia.
