To surrender completely to love, be it divine or human, means giving up everything - including our own well-being and our ability to make decisions. It means that we love in the deepest sense of the word. In fact, we do not want the kind of redemption that God has in store for us: we want to maintain control over our every move, we want to remain fully aware of our choices, and we want to choose the object of our devotion.
