According to Plato, at the beginning of creation man was not as he is today. There were no men and women, only one kind of being: it was short, it had one body and one neck, but on its head it had two faces, one looking forward and the other looking back. It was as if two creatures had been glued together at the back. This creature had two sexes, four legs and four arms. But the Greek gods were jealous because they saw that a creature with four arms could work much more, that the two faces could always see everything, so it could not be hit, and the four legs could walk for a long time or simply stay on its feet. And what is most dangerous: such a two-sexed creature needs nothing but to be able to reproduce. Then said Zeus, the greatest lord of Olympus: "I know what could be done with these mortals so that they would not be so strong." And with a flash of lightning he split them in two, creating man and woman. This greatly increased the population of the earth, but at the same time greatly weakened its inhabitants. Because now everyone had to find the lost other half again, so that they could embrace each other, and in this embrace they could regain their old strength, to be able to resist the attack, to be able to endure the long march, the tiring work again.
