The question of whether experience is a shield against the cheap or dangerous temptations of life, which speak with great force, must be answered with denial. Such temptations are false ambition, the temptations of the passions, such as love, acting, worldly success, the temptations of the senses, the excesses of food which are injurious to our health, drink and intoxicants, the passions of the flesh, and even more injurious and dangerous spiritual and moral aberrations, such as revenge, lying, greed. All these dangers and temptations haunt man with obstinate recurrence at every age. Experience, which teaches us that every exaggeration, lie and impure intention leads to disappointment, stumbling, humiliation and sickness, does not prevent us from falling prey to these temptations. Only fidelity to our character, not our experiences, can keep us from falling. There is no absolute good and evil in nature; but there is necessarily evil to man which we cannot reconcile with our character with impunity. Here, then, as always, when we have to decide, we do not inquire whether the temptation offered is good or bad in itself, but only ask, whether what we are about to do is compatible with our character. Worldly experience is not so important as a thorough and unquestioning knowledge of our character. There are inexperienced men who are true to their character and therefore do not fail the worldly test, and there are old, shrewd foxes who cannot adjust their desires to their character, and therefore fail every time and fall shamefully on their faces.

A kérdésre, vajon vérteznek-e a tapasztalatok az élet olcsó vagy veszélyes, nagy erővel megszólaló kísértései ellen, tagadással kell felelni. Ilyen kísértések a hamis becsvágy, az indulati lehetőségek, mint a szerelem, szereplés, világi siker, az érzékek csábításai, az egészségünkre káros étkezésbeli túlzások, az ital és a bódítószerek, a testi szenvedélyek s azoknál is károsabb és veszélyesebb szellemi és jellembeli eltévelyedések, mint a bosszúvágy, a hazugság, a kapzsiság. A tapasztalás, mely arra tanít, hogy minden túlzás, hazugság és tisztátalan szándék csalódáshoz, csömörhöz, megaláztatáshoz és betegséghez vezet, nem óv meg attól, hogy e kísértések áldozatai legyünk. Csak a jellemünkhöz való hűség óvhat meg a bukástól, nem pedig tapasztalataink. A természetben nincsen feltétlen jó és rossz; de föltétlenül rossz az ember számára, amit nem tudunk büntetlenül egyeztetni jellemünkkel. Tehát itt is, mint mindig, mikor döntenünk kell, ne azt kutassuk, vajon a kínálkozó csábítás önmagában jó-e vagy rossz, hanem csak azt kérdezzük: megfér-e jellemünkkel az, amit elkövetni szándékozunk? A világi tapasztalás nem olyan fontos, mint jellemünk alapos és föltétlen ismerete. Vannak tapasztalatlan emberek, akik hűségesek jellemükhöz és ezért nem buknak el a világi vizsgán, s vannak öreg, agyafúrt rókák, akik nem tudják vágyaikat jellemükhöz igazítani, s ezért mindegyre elbuknak és szégyenletesen orra esnek.

La întrebarea dacă experiența este un scut împotriva tentațiilor ieftine sau periculoase ale vieții, care vorbesc cu mare forță, trebuie să răspundem negativ. Astfel de ispite sunt ambiția falsă, ispitele patimilor, cum ar fi iubirea, actoria, succesul lumesc, ispitele simțurilor, excesele alimentare dăunătoare sănătății, băutura și substanțele intoxicante, patimile cărnii și aberațiile spirituale și morale și mai dăunătoare și mai periculoase, cum ar fi răzbunarea, minciuna, lăcomia. Toate aceste pericole și ispite îl bântuie pe om cu obstinată recurență la orice vârstă. Experiența, care ne învață că orice exagerare, minciună și intenție necurată duce la dezamăgire, poticnire, umilință și boală, nu ne împiedică să cădem pradă acestor ispite. Doar fidelitatea față de caracterul nostru, nu față de experiențele noastre, ne poate feri de cădere. Nu există bine și rău absolut în natură; dar există în mod necesar un rău pentru om pe care nu-l putem împăca cu caracterul nostru cu impunitate.
