There is a kind of man who laughs only with his mouth. They are like paralytics; like people who are deaf or have no sense of smell. You joke in their presence, you make your point in some distorted or amusing situation in life, and you are shocked to find that he does not understand or hear exactly what is so funny in this little casual story: he laughs, but he laughs with his mouth. His heart and mind failed to see the profoundly phony ridiculousness of the situation. He laughs politely, gritting his teeth. But his heart never laughs. These grim grins can be fearful. Don't joke with them. When you point to life, their response is to show their fangs.

Van egyfajta ember, aki csak a szájával nevet. Olyanok, mint a hűdöttek; mint akik süketek, vagy a szaglásuk nem működik. Tréfálkozol jelenlétükben, az élet valamilyen torz vagy mulatságos helyzetében elmondod véleményed, s megdöbbenéssel kell észlelned, hogy nem érti és nem hallja egészen pontosan azt, ami a kis, alkalmi történetben fonákul mulatságos: nevet, de csak a szájával nevet. Szíve és értelme nem látta át a helyzet mélyen fonák nevetségességét. Udvariasan nevet, fogait vigyorítja. De a szíve soha nem nevet. Ezek a komor vigyorgók tudnak félelmesek lenni. Ne tréfálj velük. Există o specie de oameni care râd doar cu gura. Ei sunt ca cei paralizați; ca cei care sunt surzi sau nu au simțul mirosului. Glumești în prezența lor, îți expui punctul de vedere într-o situație distorsionată sau amuzantă din viață și ești șocat să afli că el nu înțelege sau nu aude exact ce este atât de amuzant în această mică poveste întâmplătoare: el râde, dar râde cu gura. Inima și mintea lui nu au reușit să vadă ridicolul profund fals al situației. Râde politicos, strângând din dinți. Dar inima lui nu râde niciodată. Aceste rânjete sumbre pot fi înfricoșătoare. Nu glumi cu ele. Când arăți spre viață, răspunsul lor este să-și arate colții.
