Az élet rettenetes versenyében legtöbb ember csak akkor pihen meg, ha beteg. A betegség, a francia költő szavával, nemcsak a szegények utazása, hanem a szegények nyaralása, téli Rivierája, Tátrája és Egyiptoma is. A lázas kedélyekre a betegség igazi lázat küld, hogy kissé megnyugodjanak. A becsvágyó és kielégületlen ámokfutó, aki – mint Kleist, a költő – „váltogatja a városokat, mint a lázbeteg a vánkosokat", csak a betegágyban eszmél igazi vágyaira, reménytelen szenvedélyeire.
A betegség pihenés is, ez közhely. Ezért előzd meg a természet parancsát, a kényszerű betegszabadságot, s iktass életed iramába apró, mesterséges betegségeket, hogy megpihenjél. Makkegészségesen őrizd néha egy napon át az ágyat. Farkasétvágyad van, a szöget is megrágnád: koplalj önként egy-két napot. Szíved nem zsörtölődik még a nikotin miatt: jutalmazd meg azzal, hogy parancsoló szükség nélkül abbahagyod három napra a cigarettát. A szervezet oly hálás a legcsekélyebb figyelemért! S ezek az apró, mesterséges, a betegség parancsa nélkül felidézett betegségi és gyógyítási állapotok, önkéntes diéták, megvonások és pihenések felérnek egy keleti úttal vagy egy vakbélműtéttel. În cursa teribilă a vieții, majoritatea oamenilor se odihnesc doar atunci când sunt bolnavi. Iar aceste mici stări artificiale de boală și recuperare, diete voluntare, retrageri și pauze, evocate fără comanda bolii, sunt echivalentul unei călătorii orientale sau al unei apendicectomii.
