In times like ours, when everything happens not only horizontally but also vertically, one does the right thing if one learns to act with the caution of a front-line soldier. For to be clever, not petty, but calculating in one's movements, to be concerned with space, situation, danger, to act in the direction of least resistance, to be untimely in one's attack, but courageous and calm at the moment of attack, is to be clear in courage. To be a soldier in battle is a dangerous task, but to be a citizen in an era of total, vertical assaults of life is no less dangerous. And we live in such an era. Let us therefore calculate our movements, day and night, at every possible opportunity, so that in the great struggle which has marked us out as warriors, we do not waste our strength in vain. Night and day we must fight. Our work, our entertainment, our reading, our concepts of life, our knowledge and experience, all these are weapons in this struggle. So let us take our place in the humble and dangerous cover, in the den of our lives, watching the enemy's every move, and not wasting our energies or ammunition prematurely. And meanwhile, if the sky is starry and the enemy is asleep, let us look at the stars.

Időkben, mint amilyen a miénk, mikor nemcsak vízszintesen, hanem függőlegesen is történik minden, az ember helyesen cselekszik, ha megtanul a frontkatona óvatosságával élni. Mert az okos, nem kicsinyes, de a mozdulatokat kiszámító, a térrel, helyzettel, veszéllyel törődő, a legkisebb ellenállás irányában cselekvő, az idő előtt nem támadó, de a támadás pillanatában bátor és nyugodt magatartás egyértelmű a bátorsággal. Katonának lenni az ütközetben veszélyes feladat, de nem kevésbé veszélyes polgárnak lenni az élet totális, függőleges támadásainak korszakában. S mi ilyen korszakban élünk. Ezért számítsuk ki mozdulatainkat, nappal és éjjel, minden lehetséges alkalommal, hogy a nagy küzdelemben, mely harcosoknak jelölt ki, ne pazaroljuk feleslegesen erőinket. Éjjel és nappal harcolnunk kell. Munkánk, szórakozásaink, olvasmányaink, az életről alkotott fogalmaink, ismereteink és tapasztalataink, mindez fegyver e küzdelemben. Tehát foglaljuk el helyünket a szerény és veszélyes fedezékben, életünk odújában figyeljük az ellenség minden mozdulatát, s ne pazaroljuk idő előtt energiáinkat, sem a muníciót. S közben, ha éppen csillagos az ég, s az ellenség alszik, nézzük a csillagokat is.

În vremuri ca ale noastre, când totul se întâmplă nu numai pe orizontală, ci și pe verticală, cineva face ceea ce trebuie dacă învață să acționeze cu prudența unui soldat din prima linie. Căci să fii inteligent, nu e meschin, ci calculat în mișcări, preocupat de spațiu, de situație, de pericol, acționând în direcția celei mai mici rezistențe, intempestiv în atac, dar curajos și calm în momentul atacului, înseamnă să fii curajos. A fi soldat în luptă este o sarcină periculoasă, dar a fi cetățean într-o eră a asaltului total, vertical, al vieții nu este mai puțin periculos. Iar noi trăim într-o astfel de eră. Prin urmare, să ne calculăm mișcările, zi și noapte, cu fiecare ocazie posibilă, astfel încât, în marea luptă care ne-a marcat ca războinici, să nu ne irosim forțele în zadar. Noapte și zi trebuie să luptăm. Munca noastră, distracțiile noastre, lecturile noastre, conceptele noastre de viață, cunoștințele și experiența noastră, toate acestea sunt arme în această luptă. Așadar, să ne luăm locul în umilul și periculosul adăpost, în bârlogul vieții noastre, urmărind fiecare mișcare a inamicului și fără să ne irosim energiile sau muniția prematur. Și între timp, dacă cerul este înstelat și dușmanul doarme, să ne uităm la stele.
